How many watts does an AC use?

The AC is usually the biggest load on a summer electricity bill. Here are the rated power figures for each common size, what they mean in units per hour, and how to estimate what a month of use will cost you.

Rated power by size

These are Daikin's official rated cooling input figures, measured at full cooling output under standard test conditions.

Daikin rated cooling power input by AC size

1 ton1,045 W (FTXC35DV1B)1,100 W (FTV35CV19)
1.5 ton1,550 W (FTXC50DV1B)1,660 W (FTV50CV19)

Watts to units per hour

One unit on your bill is one kilowatt-hour (kWh): 1,000 watts running for one hour. So a 1.5 ton AC drawing 1,550 W uses about 1.55 units in an hour at full power.

An AC does not run at full power all the time. A non-inverter switches its compressor on and off, and an inverter slows down once the room is cool. The rated figure is the ceiling, not the hourly average.

Why inverters use less over a day

At full output the two types draw similar power. The difference is what happens after the room cools. An inverter keeps running gently at low speed, often well below its rated input. A non-inverter keeps restarting at full power.

That is why Daikin's FTXC-D inverters carry an A++ seasonal efficiency (SEER) rating: it measures efficiency across a season of mixed loads, not just at full power. The more hours a day the AC runs, the bigger the saving.

Estimate your monthly bill

  • Take the rated input in kW (for example 1.55 for a 1.5 ton inverter).
  • Multiply by the hours it runs each day, then by 30 days. That is the maximum units it could use in a month.
  • For an inverter in a well-sized room, real use is usually noticeably lower than that maximum once the room has cooled.
  • Multiply the units by the rate per unit shown on your own electricity bill. Rates differ by slab and company, so use your bill rather than a national average.

Ways to cut AC running cost

  • Set 26°C instead of 18°C. Each degree lower makes the compressor work harder.
  • Clean the filters every two weeks in summer; a clogged filter makes the AC work longer.
  • Keep the outdoor unit shaded and clear of walls and rubbish so it can release heat.
  • Close curtains on sunny windows and keep doors shut.
  • Use the right size: an undersized AC runs at full power all day.

Frequently asked questions

How many units does a 1.5 ton AC use in one hour?

At full cooling, a Daikin 1.5 ton inverter (FTXC50DV1B) draws about 1.55 kW, so up to about 1.55 units an hour. Once the room is cool an inverter slows down and uses less.

How many watts does a 1 ton inverter AC use?

Daikin rates the FTXC35DV1B 1 ton inverter at about 1,045 W at full cooling. Average use over an evening is lower because the compressor slows down.

Does a 2 ton AC use double the electricity of a 1 ton?

Not quite. Daikin's 2 ton FTXC60DV1B is rated at 1,890 W against 1,045 W for the 1 ton FTXC35DV1B, so about 1.8 times as much at full power.
